Types of Parent Visas

  1. Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143/173)

  2. Non-Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 103)

  4. Contributory Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 864/884)

    • Subclass 884: Temporary visa (2 years).

    • Subclass 864: Permanent visa.


Eligibility Criteria

To apply for a Parent Visa, you must:

  • Have a child who is an Australian citizen, PR, or eligible New Zealand citizen, settled in Australia.

  • Meet the Balance of Family Test (at least half of your children must live in Australia permanently, or more children must live in Australia than in any other single country).

  • Satisfy health and character requirements.


Required Documents

  • Proof of relationship (birth certificates, adoption papers).

  • Evidence that the sponsoring child is settled in Australia.

  • Identity documents (passports, birth certificates).

  • Police clearances and medical checks.

  • Balance of Family Test documents.


Processing Times

  • Contributory Parent Visa: 4–6 years (faster but higher cost).

  • Non-Contributory Parent Visa (103): Can exceed 20 years.

  • Aged Parent Visa: Similar to above, depends on category.


Costs

  • Contributory Parent Visa: Around AUD $50,000+ per applicant (including 2nd installment).

  • Non-Contributory Parent Visa: Around AUD $4,990 but long waiting times.

  • Additional costs: Medical exams, police checks, translations.
